Somatic Experiencing®
Somatic Experiencing is a form of therapy that relieves and resolves trauma & stress related health problems. We do this by focusing on the client’s perceived body sensations, their "somatic experiences".
Dr. Peter Levine, one of the original Rolfers to train under Ida Rolf, also holds doctorate degrees in Medical Biophysics and Psychology. Levine's observations of animals in the wild lead him to conclude that the key to healing traumatic symptoms lies in our being able to mirror the fluid adaption of wild animals. He developed a way of restoring the inherent self-regulating capacity of the human autonomic nervous system. Clients return to a state of equilibrium, allowing them to feel like themselves again. During sessions a client tracks his or her own felt-sense, present moment, experience. This creates awareness & release of physical tensions. Tensions that had been built up and held in their system from when the survival responses ﷯of flight, flight or freeze were never fully discharged, preventing a full return to the felt-sense of safety. The client only exposes themselves to small amounts of their activation at a time, titrating, until they build a greater & greater capacity to handle more.
